LORMAN - On Saturday, March 6, at the F.G. Clark Activity Center in Baton Rouge, the Braves basketball team enjoyed a sweet victory over the Southern Jaguars 89-83.
With this victory the Braves clinched the SWAC tournament title and a trip to Seattle to play in the NCAA tournament. This is the Braves first trip to the NCAA tournament since 1984.
This is coach Whitney's fifth time taking the Braves to the big dance. He also earned coach of the year honors in the SWAC for his great accomplishments.
Senior point guard Reuben Stiff was the MVP of the SWAC tournament and made first team All-SWAC.
At the Key Arena in Seattle, Wash., the Braves put up a valiant effort against No. 2 seed Stanford but lost 69-57.
In the first half it seemed as if the Braves did not have a chance to win this game. They trailed 40-26 at the half. In the second half the Braves put up a great fight. They clawed their way to a tie with a big three-pointer by Braves forward Terrance Cameron with 4:50 left the game. But Stanford strengthened the defense and pulled away at the end, winning the hard fought battle against the Braves.
The Braves magnificent season ended with a 23-7 record.
